Camila María Concepción Prize for Trans Activism Yale GALA has established an annual fund and prize honoring the life of alumna Camila María Concepción '14. This prize will highlight a Yale University student recipient nominated for their contributions to trans activism.
This year's prize has been awarded to two students who have dedicated their time at Yale to trans activism:
Ale '22 was incredibly proactive and persistent in embracing new members of the LGBTQ community. They hosted a series called “Trans Visibility Conversations” that showcased trans performance, art, and music. Ale was a FroCo, and has served as an LGBTQ Peer Liaison, a Cultural Connections Counselor, and a LaCasa Student Coordinator. They organized numerous online events for Yale GALA during the pandemic including a discussion on LGBTQ student life and a panel with young alumni working in LGBTQ organizations. AM has been a phenomenal leader in supporting trans visibility at Yale. He has served as both an LGBTQ Peer Liaison and a staffer at the Office of LGBTQ Resources, providing mentorship and support to transgender students. He has taken the lead in managing the Qloset, providing gender-affirming clothing, binders and gafts to students free of charge as well as coordinated the entire Transgender Visibility Series in 2022. The series included 10 programs including a private tour of the Laura Bailey Collection at the Beineke Library, Trans History of ew Haven and Black Trans Storytelling in partnership with BlackOUT and New Haven Pride Center, Trans Meditation, Transgender GNC Media Share, and the Transgender Visibility Today Panel featuring diverse representations of trans identities. In Addition, AM has been a key student organizer for queer and trans people of color events and advocacy at Yale helping to inform the strategic direction of BIPOC support and awareness in the LGBTQ community.
